gap year in israel

Italy’s Jewish communities are super fascinating!  Whether you’re walking through the ancient streets of Rome or exploring the lively city of Milan, it’s amazing to see how Jewish life has grown for so many years.

Join one of Aardvark Israel’s international trips and experience it yourself. These trips aren’t just about sightseeing, they’re about connecting with Jewish communities worldwide, hearing their stories, visiting the Israeli Embassies and finding your place in our shared history.

I grew up in Milan as part of the Persian Jewish community, where I got to experience the best of both worlds—Persian traditions, amazing food, and a deep sense of history, all deeply connected to Milan’s Jewish life. It’s something truly special, and I’d love to share it with you.

Rome: Where Ancient and Modern Meet

Rome’s Jewish community dates back over 2,000 years—Jews have been here since 161 BCE! Today, with around 15,000 people, the Jewish Ghetto is the heart of it all, packed with synagogues, kosher restaurants, and stories of resilience.

Check out the Great Synagogue of Rome, a symbol of pride and faith. You’ll also get to try incredible Jewish-Roman dishes, for example carciofi alla giudea (crispy fried artichokes).

Rome’s Jewish community is made up of families who have lived there for thousands of years, alongside immigrants from Libya and other North African countries, bringing their own traditions and adding to the community’s vibrant diversity.

Milan: A Mosaic of Jewish Diversity

Milan’s Jewish community might be newer than Rome’s, but it’s just as inspiring. With around 10,000 Jews from all kinds of backgrounds, it’s a real melting pot:

  • Italian Jews
  • Persian Jews (like my family!)
  • Libyan Jews
  • Ashkenazi Jews
  • Israeli Jews

Jewish life in Milan revolves around the Central Synagogue, Jewish schools, kosher places to eat, and cultural events like the Jewish Film Festival. The city is a perfect blend of old and new—you’ll feel it as soon as you arrive.

What Makes These Communities Special

Both Rome and Milan are proof of Jewish resilience. Even with challenges like antisemitism and the pressure to maintain Jewish identity in a secular world, these communities are thriving. They keep their traditions alive, celebrate their diversity, and connect with Jews everywhere.

Come Along!

With Aardvark Israel, you’ll meet people from these communities, hear their stories, and experience their way of life. Walk the cobblestone streets of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto, explore Milan’s diverse community, and connect with Jews from all walks of life.

This isn’t just a trip—it’s a chance to be part of something bigger.
