gap year in israel

Check out our social media to see what our students have been up to this past week!

Hi! My name is Lilach Sachs and I’m from Cape Town, South Africa. I was born in Cape Town and lived there for seven years. I then lived in Boca Raton, Florida for five years before returning back home.

I went to Jewish day school up until ninth grade, which is where I learned all about my religion and where I immersed myself in the culture. I moved to an international school for high school where I was able to learn about other cultures and religions, which, coincidentally, is when I felt most connected to mine. Since I was one of three Jewish students, I felt as though I was obligated to teach my peers about the incredible religion. I decided to go on Aardvark after graduating high school to return to my family’s roots.

I’m currently living in Florentine: a super hipster, fashion forward neighborhood. My favorite thing about this neighborhood is how central it is and how close it is to everything (especially Rothschild Boulevard). I’m interning at Mikanmor, which is a leather accessory store in the heart of Neve Tzedek. I get to be creative and make jewelry. It’s really tough work but nothing beats the feeling of when I’m finally finished with a product! My bosses are super sweet and make an effort to get to know who I am and what I want to accomplish in life.

I’m really glad that I chose Aardvark as my program for this semester. I love the madrichim and know I can talk to them about anything and they will always know what to say. I enjoy all of the lectures we have and especially loved the one about The Green Prince. It has really opened my eyes and given me more knowledge. I have definitely grown and matured since I have been here. I’ve also made so many great friends and I’ll definitely keep in touch with them in the future.

Thank you Aardvark for this truly one-of-a-kind experience!!
