Dear Aardvark Israel Family,

Last week, our students returned from Kibbutz Ketura, where innovation and community met the desert in ways they won’t forget. They came expecting sand and dates – but found solar innovation, agriculture from 2,000-year-old seeds, and real democracy in action.

Here’s what really happened:

Day One – Democracy, Redefined

A date palm growing from a 2,000-year-old seed and red mountains stretching to Jordan. 19-year-olds debated issues such as who deserves their community’s money. Day one in Kibbutz Ketura was nothing like we expected.

Fun fact: Ketura is named after Abraham’s wife, Sarah, after her death – a place of new beginnings

After a fascinating lecture on kibbutz decision-making, our students debated real cases the council faced: Should the kibbutz fund education beyond the maximum limit? Can a non-Jewish teen celebrate his bar mitzvah in the kibbutz synagogue?

We thought democracy meant voting. Here it means living with decisions you didn’t vote for.” – Amanda, Barak Community

The debates got heated. Solutions got creative. Everyone learned that community isn’t about everyone agreeing – it’s about finding a way forward together.

The day wrapped with student-led activities they prepared specially for Ketura, followed by an all-Aardvark BBQ and pool party. Because serious conversations and serious fun? That’s balance.

Days Two & Three – When The Desert Spoke

6 AM. Half our students chose to climb “Menorah Mountain” (locals light a menorah on its peak every Hanukkah) to catch the sunrise. The others? Biking only a few meters from the Jordanian border, painting desert landscapes, or discovering how to bake cookies using only the Negev sun.

The activity that many students liked the most was the Off-Grid workshop. Solar ovens that actually work. Water purification for pennies. Solutions for countries that need them most.
Then came Kasui Dunes

Massive sand mountains created by wind patterns unique to this spot. We surfed down. We climbed up. And at the peak, we stopped for a Desert Solo: A few minutes of complete silence with endless mountains, no phones, just thoughts.

“In Florentin in Tel Aviv, I always hear something – cars, people, construction. Here, for the first time, I heard nothing except myself thinking.” – Tami, Ofek

Some students cried. Some smiled. Everyone understood something they couldn’t quite put into words.

When worlds collided
When Worlds Collided
Wednesday night: Americans, Brits, Germans, Canadians, Australians – all dancing Israeli folk dances together. Surreal? Absolutely. But there they were, moving as one.

Later, guitars around the bonfire, marshmallows under the stars. We discovered students with voices that made everyone stop talking. Songs in five languages became one melody.

Thursday morning, an Arava Institute representative challenged them differently – listening to perspectives they disagree with, finding common ground where none seems to exist.
What Now ?

When we returned to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, one word kept coming up again and again – perspective.
Florentin feels different. Jerusalem makes more sense. They’re not just living in Israel anymore; they’re part of its story.

Next adventure:
Mitzpe Ramon, at the end of November – Shabbat in Israel’s Grand Canyon. It’s optional, but after Ketura, who wouldn’t want more?
